Could Testosterone Help to Stave Off Dementia in Women?

TestosteroneSusan Davis, Director of the Women’s Health Research Program at Monash University has conducted the first large, randomized, placebo-controlled investigation into the effects of testosterone on cognitive function in postmenopausal women. Results from the study show that testosterone therapy may protect women against cognitive decline. Post-menopausal women from the study on testosterone therapy showed a significant improvement in verbal learning and memory. It’s has been long held that testosterone plays a part in Men’s brain functions and it not showing indications for women as well.

Dementia affects more than 35 million people worldwide as of 2010 and women are effected by it more than men. As of now, there are no effective treatments to prevent memory decline for dementia patients.

“Much of the research on testosterone in women to date has focused on sexual function. But testosterone has widespread effects in women, including, it appears, significant favorable effects on verbal learning and memory,” Professor Davis said.
