What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a rejuvenating way to turn back the years on your skin! One of our medical professionals will apply the chemical peel solution of your choosing to your skin. In time, the spread will peel off, revealing a luminous and silkier complexion! We offer three unique SkinMedica chemical peels from SkinMedica®. Discover if chemical peels may be your key to younger-looking skin!

What Can Chemical Peels Improve?

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines often develop as collagen production slows and repetitive facial expressions begin to leave visible imprints on the skin. Chemical peels exfoliate the damaged surface layers, which triggers cell turnover and encourages the skin to regenerate with a smoother texture and a more even appearance. Regular treatments can help soften expression lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.

Uneven Skin Tone and Texture

An uneven tone or rough texture can result from accumulated dead skin cells, sun exposure and environmental stressors. Chemical peels gently remove the dull outer layer and improve the penetration of skincare products, allowing antioxidants and hydrators to perform more effectively.

Sun Damage and Age Spots

Years of sun exposure can cause pigment irregularities, coarse texture and a tired appearance. The acids used in peels, such as glycolic or trichloroacetic acid, help repair photoaged skin and restore clarity. The process can also improve skin resilience and create a smoother surface that better reflects light for a healthier glow.

Melasma and Hyperpigmentation

Chemical peels can help reduce pigment buildup by accelerating cell turnover and dispersing concentrated pigment clusters. Melasma and other forms of hyperpigmentation result from excess melanin activity triggered by hormones, heat or sunlight. Regular maintenance peels, combined with daily sun protection, can help prevent new pigment from developing and keep your skin tone more even.

Acne and Post-Acne Marks

Breakouts often leave behind scars and dark marks that linger long after the inflammation resolves. Chemical peels for acne scars exfoliate clogged pores, control excess oil, and reduce the appearance of surface irregularities. Ingredients such as salicylic and lactic acid dissolve buildup and stimulate renewal so you can enjoy a clearer complexion.

What Are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

The chemical peel benefits extend beyond smoother skin. They can help refresh your complexion, support long-term skin health and enhance the effectiveness of your skincare routine. People often choose chemical peels because they provide both visible and structural improvements that can be maintained with regular treatments.

  • Collagen production: Stimulates renewal for firmer, more resilient skin.
  • Better product absorption: Prepares the skin to receive moisture and nutrients more effectively.
  • Minimal downtime options: Lighter peels provide improvement with less peeling and downtime.
  • Customizable depth: Formulas can be adjusted for specific concerns, from mild texture issues to deeper pigmentation.

Types of Chemical Peels

Light Peels

Light chemical peels focus on the skin’s surface to remove dull cells and stimulate mild renewal. They typically use alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic or lactic acid to smooth rough texture and restore a more even tone. You can expect light flaking or redness that resolves quickly and subtle brightening without downtime. With light peels, you can schedule regular sessions to maintain smooth, vibrant skin and keep pores clear.

Medium Peels

Medium peels reach slightly deeper into the epidermis to address fine lines, uneven pigmentation and moderate texture concerns. A combination of acids is used to exfoliate damaged skin cells and trigger collagen remodeling. You may experience visible peeling for several days as new skin develops.

Deep Peels

Deep peels provide the most transformative results and are performed using stronger concentrations of acids. They address advanced sun damage, coarse wrinkles and significant discoloration by removing several layers of damaged skin under medical supervision.

What Is SkinMedica?

SkinMedica is a professional-grade skincare line developed by dermatologists and rooted in scientific research. Their chemical peels are formulated with a blend of ingredients that exfoliate, smooth, and restore clarity without irritating the skin. We use SkinMedica peels because they offer consistent, customizable results that address a wide range of concerns, from dullness to uneven tone.

Our Chemical Peel Options

Here are the three exciting chemical peels we offer:

The Illuminize Peel

The Illuminize Peel is safe for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin! Let your skin shine with this illuminating treatment! This light, superficial peel uses a combination of alpha-hydroxy acids such as mandelic and malic acid to promote radiance with minimal peeling or redness. It provides an instant glow and is a good choice before special events or as a routine skin-brightening treatment. Skin feels smoother, softer and visibly refreshed after just one session.

The Vitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel can smooth the texture of your skin and bring balance to your skin tone! Help say goodbye to sun damage and wrinkles with this revitalizing peel! This medium-depth peel blends resorcinol, lactic acid, salicylic acid and retinoic acid to exfoliate the skin and encourage collagen renewal. It is ideal for those with mild to moderate skin imperfections, including uneven tone, fine lines and light scarring.

The Rejuvenize Peel

The Rejuvenize Peel can help refresh your skin from sun damage, acne, acne scarring and melasma. This powerful peel penetrates the skin deeply for enhanced smoothing and a youthful, healthier look! It combines a higher concentration of salicylic, lactic and resorcinol acids with a retinoid booster to promote advanced exfoliation and regeneration. It is suitable for those who have already tolerated lighter peels and addresses more significant textural issues and discoloration.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Peel

Before

We begin every treatment with a detailed skin assessment to make sure the peel we select is right for your skin. You’ll discuss your skincare history, current products and any sensitivities so we can plan the best approach. We may recommend avoiding exfoliating products or active ingredients like retinol for a few days before your appointment to prevent irritation. Your skin should be clean and free of makeup or lotions when you arrive, so the peel solution can work evenly across the surface.

During

We will start by cleansing your skin to remove any remnants of dirt, grime or products, and then we will apply the chemical peel solution evenly across the treatment area. You may feel a light tingling or warmth as the ingredients begin to work. These sensations usually only last for a few minutes. We carefully monitor your comfort throughout the process. Once the peel has finished processing, we neutralize or remove the solution and apply soothing products and sunscreen to protect your freshly exfoliated skin. The entire process typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

After

You can expect your skin to feel slightly tight or warm immediately after your peel, similar to a mild sunburn. If you have a deeper peel, you may experience light flaking or peeling within a few days as the old cells shed. We will provide post-care instructions to keep your skin hydrated and protected, including when to resume regular skincare products.

How to Care for Your Skin After a Chemical Peel

Your skin will be more delicate in the days after your chemical peel, so make sure to treat it with gentle care to protect your results and support healthy healing. Have patience with your skin, avoid picking or scratching at the tender tissue and protect it with the right products. As you care for your skin, be sure to:

  • Keep it hydrated: Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to prevent dryness and support the healing barrier. Hydrated skin recovers faster and feels more comfortable as it renews.
  • Stay out of direct sun: Protect your skin from UV exposure with broad-spectrum SPF and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Skip harsh products: Stop using retinoids, exfoliants and strong acids until we let you know that your skin is ready.
  • Cleanse gently: Use a mild, non-foaming cleanser with lukewarm water to remove impurities without stripping moisture. Avoid scrubbing or hot water.
  • Focus on nourishment: Drink plenty of water and eat antioxidant-rich foods like berries and leafy greens to support your skin’s recovery from within.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for Me?

You may be a good candidate for a chemical peel if you are looking to revitalize your skin and alleviate signs of wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, sun damage or melasma. If you are experiencing severe wrinkling or sagging skin, your skin may not benefit from this treatment. If you have a medical history consisting of allergies, scarring or cold sores, consult with our medical staff first, as chemical peeling may not be the best option for you.

FAQs About Chemical Peels

How Long Will I Experience Peeling After My Treatment?

Peeling usually starts within two to three days after your chemical peel and can last anywhere from three to seven days, depending on the peel’s strength. Lighter peels may cause only mild flaking, if any, while deeper peels can produce more visible shedding. The process is part of your skin’s renewal cycle as old, dull cells lift away to reveal fresh, radiant skin underneath.

Can I Wear Makeup After a Peel?

You can usually wear makeup after 24 hours, but waiting until any visible peeling subsides will help prevent irritation. Lightweight, mineral-based products are best during recovery, as they allow your skin to breathe and heal. Always apply sunscreen first, even if you plan to wear foundation, since your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight after exfoliation.

Are SkinMedica Peels Suitable for Darker Skin Tones?

SkinMedica peels are formulated to accommodate a wide range of skin types and tones, from light to dark complexions. We select peel strengths and ingredients that minimize irritation and reduce the risk of pigment changes, and we may recommend certain products or treatment plans when performing chemical peels for dark skin. Consultation is important, as we customize the approach for each person’s skin health.

How Soon Will I See Results From My Chemical Peel?

You may see some chemical peel results within a week, once peeling has subsided and the new skin surface is visible. With some peels, your skin will look brighter and feel smoother almost immediately, while tone and texture continue to improve as collagen renewal progresses in the following weeks. Deeper peels can offer more significant improvement, but it will take more time to see your full results.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Results from your chemical peel treatment can last several months, depending on the peel’s depth and your skincare routine. Light peels can be repeated monthly for an ongoing glow, while deeper peels should be spread further apart and may last longer. If you focus on consistent sun protection, hydration and proper maintenance, you can extend your outcome.

When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Chemical Peel?

Fall and winter are great seasons for chemical peels because lower UV exposure helps protect your fresh skin as it heals. However, peels can be performed year-round with the right precautions. If your skin feels congested, dull or uneven, scheduling a peel before a special event or seasonal change can help it to look and feel more balanced and refreshed. We will help you choose the best time based on your skincare goals, lifestyle and how quickly you would like to see improvements.
