How Does Ultherapy Work?

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment known for effectively lifting and tightening the skin. This treatment is particularly popular among those who’d like to see a more youthful appearance without having to undergo surgery. Its unique approach relies on ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production, and at Premiere Center for Health and Wellness in Cincinnati, OH, it’s one of our favorite treatments to offer.

The Science Behind Ultherapy

Ultrasound energy: this technology has long been used in medical imaging, and it involves the application of sound waves at a frequency higher than what the human ear can detect. In Ultherapy, these waves are focused on the skin’s deeper layers. This targeted approach allows us to work on areas beneath the skin without making any incisions, offering a significant advantage over traditional surgical methods.

The device emits focused ultrasound energy that penetrates the skin to reach those foundational layers, and this energy then creates a thermal effect, heating the targeted tissues to approximately 60-70 degrees Celsius. While this temperature is not high enough to cause damage to the skin or surrounding tissues, it is sufficient to initiate the body’s natural healing response, which means your body will start making more collagen.

Collagen Production

Collagen is a protein found abundantly in the skin, playing a vital role in maintaining its structure and elasticity. As we age, collagen production decreases, and this has a lot to do with the development of wrinkles and sagging skin. The thermal effect generated by this ultrasound treatment stimulates the production of new collagen, a process known as neocollagenesis. This renewed collagen growth helps in tightening and lifting the skin, reducing the appearance of aging.

Targeted Areas and Precision

Ultherapy is primarily used for treating the face, neck, and décolletage areas, though its use is not limited to these regions. It is particularly effective in lifting the brow area, reducing neck sagging, and smoothing lines on the chest. The precision of ultrasound imaging allows us to view the layers of tissue being treated, ensuring that the energy is deposited precisely where it is most beneficial.

What to Expect

Preparation

Preparing for a session is relatively straightforward: this is a hassle-free cosmetic treatment! Before the treatment, you’re advised to maintain a healthy skin regimen and avoid any medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bruising. This includes avoiding anti-inflammatory drugs and blood thinners, if possible. You should arrive at the clinic with clean skin, free of any lotions, creams, or makeup.

The Session Itself

An Ultherapy session typically lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Before the treatment, the practitioner cleans the target area and applies an ultrasound gel. The device is then used to deliver ultrasound energy to the predetermined depths within the skin. Rest assured that you won’t feel any pain.

Safety

Remember: ultrasound energy is the same type used all over the world daily on pregnant women to help doctors evaluate the health of unborn babies. As you’re likely aware, cosmetic treatments are often not available to pregnant women. Why? Because they and their unborn children are more vulnerable than the regular population. This means that Ultherapy, based on the same science, is one of the safest treatments out there! This treatment is FDA-approved, as well. The non-invasive nature of the treatment makes it a very low-risk option, especially compared to surgical facelifts.

Results and Recovery

One of the significant advantages of Ultherapy is the lack of downtime. Patients can resume their regular activities immediately after the treatment. While some may notice an immediate improvement, the full effects of treatment become more apparent over two to three months as new collagen develops. The results can last for a year or more, depending on your skin condition and natural aging process.

Ideal Candidates for Ultherapy

Determining who is a good candidate for this treatment is important, as it may not be the right way to treat your specific concerns. Ideal candidates are typically individuals in their 30s to 60s who exhibit mild to moderate skin laxity. People who are not ready for surgery or those looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery can also benefit from this treatment, too.

It’s important to note that while this treatment is effective for skin tightening, it is not a substitute for a surgical facelift. Those with more pronounced skin laxity may need a more invasive approach. Come talk to us, and Linda Evans, MD and Sally Lake RN, BSN can help you determine if this treatment will address your concerns and what your options are for meeting all your goals.

Specific Conditions Treated by Ultherapy

This treatment is particularly effective in treating certain signs of aging. Here are some specific conditions it addresses:

Brow Lifting

One of the first areas to show aging is the brow and forehead region. Ultrasound energy can lift the brow, reducing droopiness and giving a more youthful appearance to the forehead and eyes.

Neck Tightening

The treatment is effective in tightening loose skin on the neck, a common issue as we age. It can reduce the appearance of what’s commonly known as ‘turkey neck’ and provide a more defined jawline.

Lowering of the Jowls

For those experiencing sagging around the jawline, this treatment can lift and tighten the jowls, leading to a more contoured facial profile.

Smoothing Chest Wrinkles

The décolletage area is often neglected in skin care routines, which means it often shows aging signs earlier than other areas of the body. This treatment can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines in this area, restoring a youthful appearance.

Tightening Under the Chin

The treatment can address sagging skin under the chin, often referred to as a ‘double chin,’ providing a more tightened and toned appearance.
